The Ways of Ord Cantrell
The History of Ord Cantrell -
The only planet orbiting the sun of the Ord Cantrell System, Ord Cantrell is a sparsely settled, temperate world. It has one major forest which covers most of the northern hemisphere. Named after Daymon Reumar, the Kiffar explorer who first mapped it, the “Reumar Wood” is flanked by the Darmanis Jungle. The dense jungle region is split by the great, Moryne River, which runs the length of the planet and drains into Lake Moryne.
Ord Cantrell’s major urban center, Settler’s Rock, is situated on the southern bank of the Moryne River to take advantage of its endless supply of food and energy, as well as granting easy access to the wooded regions in the north. West, along the river, is Hangman’s Beach — a flat, rocky area where the colonists landed. The shore gained its name from a time when the colonists would use the trees along its edge as gallows to hang pirates, who used the river to launch swift raids on the small settlement. The mandatory death sentence for all pirates and public display of the punishment was intended to dissuade others from pursuing such a career but had little success in that regard.
The southern hemisphere is less hospitable and to the west of the fledgling civilization lies No Man’s Land — a large desert that few have tried to cross since the first explorers and cartographers mapped the planet. Beyond the desert is a flat, rocky wasteland bordered by the Darmanis Jungle to the north and the Gorra Mountains to the west. The regions are named for James Darmanis and John Gorra, a pair of Correlians that first came to the planet with the Twi’lek adventurer turned pirate turned planetary overlord, Tealon Moryne.
Moryne first settled with a band of like-minded thugs in the rocky region on the river’s southern banks and used Ord Cantrell as a base of operations for raids into surrounding systems. Now the area forms the stronghold from which he and his band rule the planet. While Moryne is said to have been the Ord Cantrell’s first inhabitant, that fact may only be part of the myth that has sprung up around him. At the very least, it has been confirmed that he was the first to travel the river and the lake, hence their names.
In the early days of the planet’s settlement, Moryne and his crew turned their attention to the new inhabitants and often raided their camps for slaves and supplies. The colonists put up a valiant fight, despite their lack of arms and equipment, but were no match for the organized and well-armed pirates. After several skirmishes, the settlers relented and recognized the pirates as the ruling body of the planet, an arrangement that continues to this day.
Ord Cantrell began as an outer rim depot for the Galactic Republic many many years ago. A small population flourished until the fall of the Republic and the depot and its population were forgotten and left to fend for themselves. In time more nefarious elements found their way to the underdeveloped and undefended system. These nameless brigands warred with the local population until eventually they submitted to their rule. This was the status quo for years until a young enigmatic Kiffar managed to subvert the auto-defenses on the planet thanks to his recent acquisition of an antique corvette that had been utilized as a command center for the entire planet. The previous warlord was proclaimed dead and many of his followers fled to the wilderness of Old Cantrell or left the system for other outer rim worlds.
A year later an influx of Kiffar refugees began spilling onto the planet, brought there by the same Kiffar who had laid claim to the planet. The diaspora came from the civil war that embroiled Kiffex and many Kiffar found a new home on Ord Cantrell. This influx allowed for a new regime to take control over the planet. Clan Chatillon, which previously held much wealth and territory on its home planet, were now the overseers. Control was tenuous at best and skirmishes with the former occupying forces were common. During this conflict the head of the clan was injured in an attack. The doctors did what they could but the Clan leader had to be put into a stasis coma to allow for the body to fully heal. With his absence the chaos on the planet seemed to grow until only a few cities were safe and the rest of the planet was considered lawless. To make matters worse, the facility which housed the stasis tank came under attack and partially destroyed. Leading many to believe their leader died in this attack. The Kiffar leaders sought an uneasy truce with the militants on the planet and certain areas were seceded to them.
This uneasy peace lasted until a fortuitous moment of chance. A Jawa scavenger discovered the medical wing of the facility during a salvage run. The stasis chamber and life support were still operational and the curious Jawa accidentally reactivated the slumbering Kiffar. They exchanged formalities as best they could and went their separate ways after the Jawa filled the Kiffar in on the current state of the planet. Awakened and physically changed by the prolonged stasis the Kiffar embarked on returning prosperity and tranquillity to Ord Cantrell.
Ord Cantrell Born Sentients -
The Kiffar-Human hybrids born on Ord Cantrell are a unique sub-species of humans that evolved into a humanoid variant that embodied the power and beliefs of the Kiffar clans while maintaining humanoid resiliency. Their appearance is similar to that of the standard human, with the exception of their hair, which is naturally marked with unique patterns that are seen as a sign of beauty and a symbol of their religious beliefs, or their unique Qukuuf, which follows similar patterns.
The Kiffar-Humans are known for their religious devotion, which stems from their belief in a higher power called the “Lotus Gods.” This belief is deeply ingrained in their culture and influences every aspect of their lives. As a result, they are often seen as quite spiritual, and their religious rituals and practices are central to their daily lives. The planet Ord Cantrell is known for its rich cultural and production hubs from orbital stations above the atmosphere, making it a hub for trade and commerce throughout the galaxy. The Kiffar-Humans have traditionally been at the forefront of this trade, serving as merchants and traders who facilitate the exchange of goods and services across the planet and beyond.
However, the Kiffar-Humans are also known for their wariness of outsiders. This is due to a long and tumultuous history that has seen their planet ravaged by pirates and torn apart by civil war. As a result, they are fiercely protective of their culture and way of life and are often hesitant to engage with outsiders unless they can be assured of their intentions. Despite this, the Kiffar-Humans are a proud and resilient people who have managed to thrive in a complex and often hostile environment. Their unique blend of spirituality, commerce, and wariness has allowed them to maintain a distinct and vibrant culture admired throughout the galaxy.
Kiffar Spiritualism -
“At first there was only the One Great Spirit. It was lonely so it looked in upon itself and saw an infinitely expanding vortex. The One then expanded and fractalized, creating the universe. It poured itself into the stars, the planets, and every aspect of reality. Its voice becoming a multitude as they manifested across time and space, creating the All-Spirits.” – Excerpt from the “Ruminations of Spirit” by Kifu Sonlan Vis
Kiffar Spiritualism is a catch-all term for the panoply of sects practiced by the Kiffar people of Kiffex and Kiffu. The religion has spread to some of the Kiffar colonies across the galaxy but mostly retains a strong presence on the twin home-worlds. The practices are as old as the Qukuuf traditions and are as varied as the different patterns between clans. The key distinction between most sects is how they believe it best to commune with the Spirits. Kiffar Spiritualism at its core is a shamanistic reverence for spiritual beings that exist in another dimension yet connected to ours. Their influence manifests as animals, plants, objects, emotions, technology, and even the Force within our reality. Providing guidance to any who seek their counsel via sacred means. Because the Spirits exist outside our notions of time, it is believed they can observe past, current, and future events. Therefore their advice can be prophetic at times. While there is an almost infinite number of Spirits, they are all facets of the same spiritual entity. A matter of discourse which pits many sects against the other in debate. However the method of communion still remains the foremost divider between the different sects.
Because of the pluralistic nature of the religion, many followers are divided on the ideal ways to commune with the spirits. Those who use various methods of communion, regardless of the sect that originated it, are called Syncretic followers. While those who choose to fully devote themselves to a singular sect and practice are referred to as Devout. Some sects find the shallow or uneducated use of their rituals as offensive while others are more open to less singularly-dedicated followers. The varying opinions have caused a multitude of civil wars and planetary strife throughout Kiffar history. It wasn’t until they accessed the stars that the fervor died down. Some sects however are still very particular with letting Syncretic followers learn their rituals, Red Lotus and the Daughters of the Sun are notoriously opaque to the undevout.
Force sensitive individuals are regarded with reverence across most sects. It is a commonly held view that those able to command such power are blessed by the Spirits and their path is one they follow closely. Neither dark or light side aspects are abhorred, rather a balance per each individual is sought after communing with the Spirits. The gift of Psychometry is common amongst many Kiffar and is viewed as one of the most true ways to commune with the Spirits. Because of this those with the ability are especially revered among most sects.
